Program Structure

Students must complete 48 UOC when taken as a standalone program.

Advanced Disciplinary Knowledge Core Courses

36 Units of Credit:

Students must take 36 UOC of the following courses.

• Heat in Underground Mines

• Ventilation System Management

• Coal Mine Hazards and Control

• Spontaneous Combustion and Reactive Ground

• Mine Ventilation Legislation

• Mine Ventilation Practices

Disciplinary Knowledge Core Courses

12 Units of Credit:

Students must take 12 UOC of the following courses.

• Ventilation and Mine Services

• Environmental Contaminants

Professional Development

The following 4 courses are offered for Ventilation Officers professional development.

• MNNG9901 Ventilation and Mine Services (6 UOC)

• MNNG9902 Environmental Contaminants (6 UOC)

• MNNG9905 Mine Hazard and Control (6 UOC)

• MNNG9920 Spontaneous Combustion and Reactive Ground (6 UOC)

Minimum Entry Requirements

Relevant industry experience or access to an underground mine is essential for entry to the Graduate Diploma in Mine Ventilation. International students who qualify for entry and have access to an underground mine are accepted.

Entry is considered for each individual based on portfolio supporting the application, including details of relevant industry experience. An entry interview may be required.

In addition to access to an underground mine, and relevant experience, the following entry requirements apply to this program:

• A minimum of 3 years mining experience in a responsible position AND a Deputy’s certificate, Undermanager’s certificate or Mine Manager’s certificate, or Mine Surveyor's certificate.
   

Or
 

• A 3 or 4 year degree in Mining Engineering with a minimum 65% average in the last 2 years of the degree AND at least 1 year experience in underground in coal or metal mining.
   

Or
 

• A 3 or 4 year degree in Civil Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering (with a minimum 65% average in the last 2 years of the degree) AND at least 2 year experience in underground in coal or metal mining.
   

Or
 

• students who can demonstrate equivalent prior learning may be approved an alternative entry pathway by written permission of the Program Authority.
