Program Overview

Melbourne Business School's Master of Economics offers advanced studies in economics and econometrics. You will gain the skills necessary to practice as a professional economist in the public or private sectors.

Graduates of the Master of Economics will have detailed knowledge of the most recent research in the disciplines of economics and econometrics and will have developed the skills needed to make their own contributions to that research. Graduates will leave as critical thinkers in microeconomics, macroeconomics and econometrics. They will develop expertise in:

Fundamental principals influencing markets and managing organisations
Evaluating the impact of a variety of cultural and environmental factors on economic policy and business decisions
Interpreting and critically evaluating articles in economics research literature

First year economics core

Students complete the following core subjects in their first year:
- Advanced Microeconomics
Second year economics core
- Microeconomics
- Case Studies in Microeconomic Policy
- Labour Economics
- Game Theory
- Development Economics
- Economic Design
- Monetary Economics
- Macroeconomic Techniques
- Modelling the Australian Macroeconomy
Entry Requirement
In order to be considered for entry, applicants must have completed:
- an undergraduate degree in any discipline with a weighted average mark of at least H3 (65%), or equivalent; and
- a portfolio of recent design work, submitted in accordance with the requirements of the Selection Committee; and
- a personal statement which outlines relevant prior study, work experience and motivation to undertake the course; and, for students not seeking credit;
- a 250-word essay on one designed or vernacular work of landscape architecture that the applicant has seen and found significant.
- Meeting these requirements does not guarantee selection.
In ranking applications, the Selection Committee will consider:
- prior academic performance; and
- the personal statement; and
- the design portfolio.
