The Swinburne University of Technology is a Melbourne, Australia-based public research university that is frequently referred to as Swinburne. George Swinburne established it in 1908 as the Eastern Suburbs Technical College to assist residents in Melbourne's eastern suburbs who lacked access to higher education. Its main campus is located in the Melbourne neighbourhood of Hawthorn, 7.5 kilometres from the city's CBD. In addition to its main campus in Hawthorn, it also has campuses in Sydney, Sarawak, Malaysia, Wantirna, and Croydon in the Melbourne metropolitan area.
