Program Overview

Gain the skills and experience to excel in any media job with the Bachelor of Media Communication. This degree will create a new generation of thinkers, future-driven media and communication professionals who will dare to create positive change across all endeavours. With a choice of four specialisations: journalism, media, public relations or screen - the emphasis is on developing your practical experience and work-ready skills, so much so that you will be building a portfolio of real work. You’ll learn to focus on new ways of doing things, to challenge convention, and devise solutions that will take us into the next century.

Course Content
The course develops through three themes that combine to underpin media communication practice: Strategic knowledge, Practical and Professional skills and Collaboration and Leadership
- Part A: Strategic knowledge
  This theme prepares you to be able to adapt to media communication changes in the future. You will build competence in analysing and understanding how media communication has changed overtime, and what impact this has on us at a local and global level. You’ll understand media powerand be able to create future scenarios and media communication visions.
- Part B: Practical and Professional Skills
  You’ll develop skills in linking your knowledge and media practice in a professional context, such implementing concepts, managing projects and content. You will gain hands-on experience in testing and creatively experimenting with putting ideas into practice. You’ll also develop competency in the ethical and legal aspects of media communication.
- Part C: Collaboration and leadership
  You’ll be competent working in a team and in different professional media communication settings. You’ll develop the skills needed to engage with different stakeholders and experts from academia, industry, government and the community. You’ll also develop competency in social and cross-cultural awareness.
- Part D: Free elective study
  Free elective units in all specialisations enable you to further your knowledge of your specialisation, or media communication more broadly, or to select units from across the University in which you are eligible to enrol. For students in a double degree course, some units required for the other degree can also be credited as electives towards the media communication specialist degrees.
Entry Requirement
All Monash undergraduate courses require you to have successfully completed a minimum of an Australian Year 12 qualification (or equivalent) and achieve the required academic entry score. Most Monash faculties generally use your most recent studies for admission however other guidelines may apply where your prior qualification may be considered.
