About
Avondale University is a tertiary education provider in Australia affiliated with the Seventh-day Adventist Church. It is part of the Seventh-day Adventist education system, which is the second-largest Christian school system in the world. In 1897, the Avondale School for Christian Workers was established and in 1911, its name was changed to Australasian Missionary College. The college had a significant impact on later Adventist education. After 1951, students could pursue a Bachelor of Science through the University of London's external programme and a Bachelor of Arts through Pacific Union College. The institution was renamed Avondale College in 1964. It received government accreditation to offer bachelor's degrees in 1974. Master's degrees were first provided in the 1970s through Andrews University, and then from Avondale itself in the 1990s.
In 2013, the institution signed a memorandum of understanding with Charles Sturt University in its bid for full university status, and the first students graduated with degrees jointly awarded by both establishments in the academic year 2015. TEQSA approved Avondale College of Higher Education's application to change its category from "Higher Education Provider" to "Australian University College" in 2019. While in 2021, TEQSA granted Avondale University's application to change its category from "Australian University College" to full Australian University status.
FEE-HELP was implemented at Avondale University in 2005. PhD degrees have been offered in New South Wales since 2006, following approval from the Department of Education and Training. The institution council voted in 2010 to change the college's name to "Avondale College of Higher Education" as an interim step towards full university status. The university maintains close relationships with many colleges and universities in the Seventh-day Adventist education system, and international students can spend a semester or year at Avondale. It also has reciprocal agreements with the Universities of Newcastle, New England, and a nearby branch of Charles Sturt University, where students can take "cross-credit" courses online.
The Lake Macquarie campus is where all courses are taught. The nursing school is located on the grounds of the Sydney Adventist Hospital in Wahroonga. Nursing students can choose to spend their first year on either campus. Christian Studies I and II are required for all students. The first covers salvation as well as Christian belief and lifestyle, while the second is more Adventist-specific. Graduate and Master’s degree certificates/diplomas are available in education, nursing, leadership and management, arts, theology, and ministry. The PhD programme is primarily available in the fields of education, arts, and theology. The university has a great network of noble alumni.
Facilities
The main campus of Avondale is the Lake Macquarie Campus, which is located on the Avondale Estate in Cooranbong. The campus provides an ideal learning and living environment with its picturesque surroundings, historic and modern learning facilities, and supportive lecturers. The Sydney Campus houses the Faculty of Nursing and Health and is situated on the grounds of the Sydney Adventist Hospital (SAH), Australia's largest private hospital. Avondale's Nursing programme is housed in the new Clinical Education Centre, which offers nursing students high-tech, multi-disciplinary training. It is one of Australia's oldest continuing nursing schools. Apart from academics, social activities are an important part of student life on campus.
