The Gates Millennium Scholars (GMS) program was established in 1999. It is a 1.6 billion dollar initiative funded by a grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The primary goal of the Gates Millennium Scholars program is to promote academic excellence and to provide an opportunity for outstanding minority students with significant financial need to reach their highest potential. The field of study covered in the areas of computer science, education, engineering, library science, mathematics, public health or science.

The selection of scholars for the Gates Millennium Scholarship involves a multi-stage process. The scholars will be selected after a thorough assessment of financial needs of all the applicants. The selection process includes:
Terms and Conditions
The continuation of the scholarship depends on the good academic performance of the scholars in the examinations conducted by their respective universities.
Renewal cases of stipend holders who are not promoted to the next year will not be considered for further renewal.
Gates Scholars have come from all 50 states and all American territories and commonwealths.
This scholarship needs a separate external application.
