Scholarship Overview

The Frank Knox Memorial Fellowships were established at Harvard University in 1945 by a gift from Annie Reid Knox, wife of the late Frank Knox, who served as U.S. Secretary of the Navy in the 1940s. Frank Knox believed that strong ties between the United States and the British Commonwealth were essential to international peace. The Knox Memorial Fellowship program promotes this legacy through scholarly exchange, in part by providing fellowships to students from Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom who wish to conduct graduate study at Harvard University. Fellows are selected on the basis of academic excellence, strength of character, and potential for leadership in their field.

Eligibility

Knox Fellowships are open to men and women who:

  • Are citizens of Australia at the time of application and who are normally residing in Australia; AND
  • have completed or will complete a first or higher degree at an Australian university; AND
  • are studying for a first or higher degree and will graduate in the academic year 2020-2021; OR have completed a first or higher degree and graduated no earlier than 2016.
  • Please note that persons who graduated before 2016 will not be eligible to apply.
  1. No application will be considered from any student already in the United States.
  2. Each Knox Fellowship applicant must also submit an Application for Admission directly to the Harvard graduate or professional school of their choice. Knox Fellowships are awarded only to those candidates that gain admission to Harvard as full-time degree-program students. Applicants are urged to begin correspondence with that school’s Admissions Office at the earliest possible date. Applicants should submit Applications for Admission to the appropriate school as early as possible and need not wait for the deadline. Preference will be given to candidates pursuing full-time degree programs.
  3. Knox Fellowship applicants seeking admission to Harvard Law School should have completed their resident university education and hold a basic degree in Law before applying for an advanced degree program such as the Master of Laws (LLM).
  4. Knox Fellowships are not awarded for undergraduate study or postdoctoral research, nor do they support medical research, post-doctoral research, or any other research appointment. They are not available for part-time programs or Executive Education programs. Normally Frank Knox Fellows must be in residence in the Boston/Cambridge area during the first two years of their degree program. (The fellowship will not support students whose programs require extensive field-work during this period.)

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get information about admission requirements at Harvard?

Prospective graduate students should contact the Admissions and Financial Aid Office of the particular Harvard graduate or professional school of interest to them. Prospective undergraduate students should contact the Harvard College Admissions and Financial Aid Office.

What is the origin of all this funding?

The majority of the Committee’s programs are funded with income from Harvard endowment funds established specifically for this purpose as a result of gifts to the university. Most of these scholarships and fellowships are restricted to students who meet specific eligibility criteria established by the original donors. CGS funds represent only a small fraction of the financial support available to Harvard students. It is important that all students begin their search for financial support with the Financial Aid Office of the school within Harvard University in which they plan to enroll.

Are the funds listed here all that are available at Harvard?

The funds and programs offered through the Committee on General Scholarships are only a small sample of the support available to Harvard students. Most financial support is managed within the College or the graduate or professional school in which the student is planning to enroll. All applicants should begin their search for financial support with the Financial Aid Office of that school, and then return here to determine whether there are additional or supplemental programs for you at CGS.
