Program Overview

The MSc in Chronic Disease and Immunity is designed for students aspiring to careers in health care, clinical management of complex chronic diseases or are keen to learn about the complex interplay between inflammation and immunology.

 

This course will build on your excellent foundational knowledge of biology, physiology and biochemistry to provide insight into the inflammatory and immunological mechanisms underlying many of the most important causes of suffering today, including diabetes, chronic kidney disease, cardiovascular inflammatory conditions and other comorbidities. It provides a research-focused degree programme which is comprised of both classroom and laboratory-based learning.

 

This MSc can be used to build clinical experience or as a preparation for a follow-on PhD. During the course, you will be taught by internationally recognised clinicians who provide world-class patient care within the National Health Service.

Project
At the end of the first semester you will start your MSc Laboratory Research Project, to be undertaken from January until July in the second semester under the supervision of a member of staff. Your project write-up will be submitted as a dissertation and forms a major part of the final degree mark. It may be possible to undertake a project in the Universities of Nantes or Rennes in France as part of an Erasmus Exchange Scheme.

 

Recent projects by Chronic Disease and Immunity MSc students have included:

 

  • Procoagulant signalling in platelets via the tyrosine kinase receptor FcγRIIa
  • Regulation of the SNAT2 (slc38a2) amino acid transporter by L-Glutamine in a rat model of chronic kidney disease (CKD)
  • Wnt-5A signalling and fibrosis in asthma
  • Role of properdin in LPS-mediated tolerance of macrophages
  • The role(s) of HTRA1, a novel serine peptidase involved in the activation of the complement system, in the pathophysiology of inflammatory disease
  • Understanding the mechanisms of airway constriction by allergen exposure using the precision lung cut slices ex vivo model

  • 2:2 degree in a biological science (e.g. Biochemistry, Biomedical Sciences or Immunology)
  • Or a BTEC with experience in a field related to chronic disease and immunity, such as a health service or biopharmaceutical laboratory
  • Or a medical or veterinary degree, provided that the course included significant elements of molecular biology, and immunology


English Language Requirements
IELTS 6.5 or equivalent. If your first language is not English, you may need to provide evidence of your English language ability. If you do not yet meet our requirements, our English Language Teaching Unit (ELTU) offers a range of courses to help you to improve your English to the necessary standard.

  • £8,250

 

If you are resident outside the UK and the Republic of Ireland, you will need to pay a deposit of £3,000 to secure your place. This will be subtracted from your total tuition fee.

 

International Students
This is the total course fee.

You will need to pay a deposit of £3,000 to secure your place. This will be subtracted from your total tuition fee.

 

From 2022 onwards, EU nationals will pay the International fee. If you are an EU national with settled or pre-settled status under the EU settlement scheme, you may qualify for the UK fee (subject to criteria).

International students who study at the University of Leicester may be eligible for a Graduate Visa which grants permission to stay in the UK for at least 2 years after successful completion of their course.
