Overview

About

Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU) is a public research university located in the heart of Manchester, England.  The development of the university involved the amalgamation of numerous colleges with a range of specialisations, including technology, art, and design. The Manchester Mechanics Institute and the Manchester School of Design later renamed the Manchester School of Art, are credited with their founding. Manchester Polytechnic received university status on September 15, 1992, as a result of the comprehensive Further and Higher Education Act of 1992. Since then, the institution has changed its name to its current title.

The Manchester School of Physiotherapy (MSOP), an institution that was formally established in 1991 through the merger of the Schools of Physiotherapy of the Manchester Royal Infirmary (MRI) and of Withington Hospital, was absorbed by Manchester Met after achieving university status along with Crewe and Alsager College of Higher Education and the Manchester School of Physiotherapy. Prior to the final class of 2005, MSOP was associated with the Victoria University of Manchester, which extended degree-level courses. The Department of Health Professions, formerly known as MSOP, joined the university in 2004 as the Department of Physiotherapy. The six spade-irons that are grouped together in the upper portion of the university's shield, representing hard work and entrenchment, are the source of the university's logo.

Previously, the institution was spread across seven different locations, including two in Cheshire and five in Manchester (All Saints, Aytoun, Didsbury, Elizabeth Gaskell, and Hollings) (Alsager and Crewe). In order to streamline its estate, the institution later closed six of the seven locations. The university relocated the Alsager campus' operations to Crewe, closing the Aytoun site in 2012 after a Business School was established on the main campus. In 2014, the Elizabeth Gaskell, Hollings, and Didsbury campuses were shut down, and the faculties were transferred to Manchester's main city centre campus. The Crewe site was shut down in the summer of 2019, as a result of an assessment carried out by financial advice company Deloitte. The university today has 14 University Centres for Research and Knowledge Exchange, 10 Professional Services Directorates, four faculties under the leadership of Faculty Pro-Vice-Chancellors, as well as a number of schools and departments.

Five university students who were chosen by the students to represent them in governing the Union are known as the Union Officers Group. Inside the Students' Union, a store and café have also been established to serve college students.
