Overview

About

Established in 1880, École Normale Supérieure de Lyon is among the four prestigious institutes of its kind in France. A grande école is an elite professional school which is a counterpart of the French public university system. They offer courses at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels and even provide professional courses alongside functioning as research centres. The institute located in the French city of Lyon is also affiliated with the University of Lyon and has connections with the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS).

The institute houses over 2,400 students with 462 students pursuing doctoral programmes. The organisation is divided into two academic units of Arts and Sciences. There are two campuses in the city, one at Monod which houses the Natural and Experimental Sciences Departments and the other one at Descartes which houses the Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences Departments. Being a highly selective, specialised and prestigious institute the École Normale Supérieure de Lyon acceptance rate is just 5%.

Ranking

Écoles in France are often ranked separately as compared to the university system in the country. While écoles are regarded as among the most prestigious in the country, they are not regarded as the same internationally. While the Times Higher Education’s World University Rankings consistently place the École Normale Supérieure de Lyon ranking as among the Top 20 small universities across the world, these institutes are known to centre their focus on the quality of education and research.
