All About GRE Scores

What Is The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) Test?

The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is the largest graduate school entrance exam in the world. It is conducted by the Educational Testing Service (ETS). Every year, more than 5,00,000 students from 160 countries take the GRE test across 1,000+ test centres. GRE scores are accepted by thousands of international graduate programmes, including masters and doctorate degrees. If you plan on studying abroad, then this is a big sign that you will need to take the GRE.

Graduate Record Examination (GRE) Paper Pattern

The GRE paper-based exam is held in November and February, twice a year. But the computer-based exam can be taken anytime in a year. However, for the online exams, students can only appear up to five times in a year.

Paper-Based Exam –

  • Analytical Writing: 2 sections – 2 tasks, 60 minutes.
  • Verbal Reasoning: 2 sections – 50 questions, 70 minutes.
  • Quantitative Reasoning: 2 sections – 50 questions, 80 minutes.

Computer-Based Exam –

  • Analytical Writing: 1 section – two tasks, 60 minutes.
  • Verbal Reasoning: 2 sections – 40 questions, 60 minutes.
  • Quantitative Reasoning: 2 sections – 40 questions, 70 minutes.

What is a Good GRE Score Overall?

It’s hard to say with certainty what a “good” GRE score is in absolute terms, because there are variations in programmes. But if you want to know how a particular score stacks up against all other test-takers, you can check out the official GRE score percentiles.

GRE Score Range

Let’s take a look at the GRE score range. The GRE scores range for the general test is from 130 to 170 per section. Remember, the total score is calculated only based on your Verbal and Quantitative Reasoning section.  The max score is 340, and the combined scores range from 260-340. Here is the GRE score range for each section:

GRE General testScored scale
Quantitative reasoning130-170, in 1-point increments
Verbal reasoning130-170, in 1-point increments
Analytical reasoning0-6, in half-point increments

The score range for the subject test is from 200 to 900, in 10 point increment. The scores are calculated independently for each test and should be compared only with other scores on the same subject test. For instance, a physics test score of 720 in 2021 should be considered equivalent to a 720 physics test in 2020.

What Is a Good GRE Score for You?

First you have to remember that a GRE good score range for you will be one that is high enough to get you into the programmes you wish to attend, provided you meet the other qualifications the programme is looking for.

A GRE good score range will help you maintain smooth admissions sailing, but it won’t build the boat. You have to do that. Apart from that, a particularly good score can also help you qualify for fellowships and scholarships, particularly ones that are university-wide, where GRE scores and GPA may be the only meaningful ways of comparing applicants across disciplines.

What Is A Good GRE score?

To calculate a GRE good score range, it is essential that you first know the average GRE score of individuals who have taken the test.

Average GRE score for General Test

The average GRE score for Quantitative reasoning is 153.39, Verbal reasoning is 150.37, and Analytical writing is 3.58. Thus, the total score will be 303. Here is the percentile ranking.

GRE SectionAverage GRE ScorePercentile Ranking
Verbal Reasoning150.3745
Quantitative Reasoning153.3948
Analytical Writing3.586

From the above table, you can determine that the average score for the Quantitative and Verbal Reasoning section only accounts for 48 (153.39) and 45 (150.37) percentile, respectively. This means that you scored better than 45 out of every 100 test-takers on Verbal reasoning. A 45th percentile is just an average score and not an excellent one. It will not be a good score for highly competitive programmes as the average score for the Grad schools is above 303.

Generally, a 75th percentile is a really GRE good score range and a 90th percentile is an excellent one. Thus, a score of 318 and above is good, whereas a score of 329 is an excellent one. A score of 300 or more is considered average, and a 292 score is considered below average.

FAQs

1) What is a good score on GRE?

The programmes you are considering will determine what a “good” GRE score is. A GRE score in the 75th percentile is considered to be good, and one in the 90th percentile is exceptional. Thus, a score of 318 or more is considered good, while a score of 329 is considered great. A score of 292 is regarded as below ordinary, while a score of 300+ is deemed typical.

2) What is the lowest GRE score?

The lowest GRE score that you can is 260. A score below 260 is not considered favourable by many universities.

3) Is GRE tough to crack?

When compared to other tests like the SAT and ACT tests, the GRE test is frequently thought of as the most challenging graduate college entry exam. The GRE is a difficult exam, because of the tough essays, reading, and vocabulary components, but with practice and dedication, you can score well on the test.

4) What GRE score do I need for my master’s?

You will typically require GRE scores in the range of Writing Analytically – 4.0 and higher. Verbal Reasoning – 155 or higher. And over 160 in quantitative reasoning, if you’re applying to a highly competitive Master’s program at a prestigious university.

5) Can a high GRE score get you a scholarship?

Students with excellent GRE results are eligible to seek and receive a variety of scholarships. The required score on the verbal and quantitative sections for the GRE scholarship is 165. Additionally needed is a GRE writing score of at least 4.5.
