Let us all face it; the cost of studying in the US is an expensive affair. We have come up with some life-saving hacks that will help you understand how to fund study at American universities.

While you may consider making compromises by choosing a more affordable university as a solution to avoid expenses; we’ll show you how to study at the university of your choice and manage your funding for a happy student life. The table below depicts the average tuition fees of studying in the US universities. Knowing your expenses is crucial to planning how to fund study at American universities.

DegreeTuition Fees (USD)
English language studies$700 – $1200  per month
Undergraduate bachelor degree$20,000 – $40,000 per year
Graduate degree$20,000 – $45,000
Doctoral degree$28,000 – $55,000
Community colleges$6,000 – $22,000

Keep in mind that these are only the tuition fees. During your period of study in an American University, you will come across other expenses such as accommodation, travel & transportation, living expenses, and many other miscellaneous expenses. Do not get overwhelmed by these costs. There’s always a way of figuring out things because being able to manage your expenses is key to a student’s survival in the US. Given below is a chart that depicts the different sources a student can use to fund study at American universities.

Types Of Funding For Study In The US Universities

Take a look at the chart below to get an idea of various sources that could help fund your education in the US for one academic year.

Ideally speaking, there are many ways to fund study at American universities and they include:

  • Private/Family Savings: The first source of funding anyone would resort to would be their savings. In the chart above, about 39.54% of the funding is from parents’ contribution. However, do remember that you have a list of expenses on your plate and there are chances that your savings won’t suffice. So, keep other options open.
  • Scholarships: You can fund about 24.95% of your studies with the help of  scholarships to study in the US. These scholarships could either be provided by the government, or US universities, or via external organizations. We will be elaborating on this in the later section.
  • Education Loans: More often than not, scholarships may not altogether suffice and pay for all of your expenses. At such times, education loans come handy and do the needful. As you can see in the chart above, student loans contribute to 10.64% of the funding.
  • Student Income/ Part-Time Jobs: Universities in the US allow their students to undertake part-time jobs that often help them to cover all their other expenses.
  • Alternatively, there are students who study the elaborate costs involved in studying in the US well in advance, say at least a year before. They may then start saving up for college in many possible ways that they can. This contributes a small percentage to fund study at American universities.
