The University of Birmingham is a public research university located in Edgbaston, Birmingham, England. The university was established in 1900 as the Birmingham Municipal Technical School and expanded to its present size in 1966. It is known for its four Nobel Prize winners: Patrick Blackett, Max Born, Rudolf Peierls and David Easton. In 2014-2015 there were approximately 29,000 students at The University Of Birmingham with over 15% being from overseas (this figure has been increasing year on year). The majority of students live off campus but there is The University of Birmingham accommodation available for around 8% of all undergraduate students who live on campus; this varies depending on which course or degree you are studying as well as your family circumstances such as whether you have children.

Halls Of Residence

Birmingham University halls of residence are available to all full-time undergraduate students and postgraduates not living with a parent or spouse. These halls are located in or near the city centre and provide accommodation in self-catered flats, which consist of two bedrooms, a kitchen and a bathroom. Some also have an en suite shower room only. Halls can be rented either by term (9 weeks) or by year (48 weeks). The rates for halls vary from £95 per week up to £137 per week depending on the type of Birmingham Uni accommodation you choose as well as your length of stay in Birmingham.

For international students who are paying tuition fees (tuition fees vary depending on their country of origin).

Private Accommodation & Student Houses

Private accommodation is available for second-year students, and beyond. If you’re looking to rent a room in a shared house or flat, prices start at £95 per week. Alternatively, you can rent a whole house or flat by yourself.

Rent varies depending on location and quality of facilities but typically starts from around £80 per week for a shared house or flat with shared kitchen facilities; up to £120 per week for an ensuite room in a private rented house/flat that has its own kitchen and bathroom facilities. Some properties have off-street parking, gardens and/or garages which are added to this price (usually around £10-15 extra per month). Note that accommodation companies have discretion over who they let their property out to so please visit our accommodation page for further details about this important aspect of finding University of Birmingham accommodation.

If you choose to live in private accommodation (which is only available to second-year students onwards), you may have to pay a large deposit upfront but this is usually refunded at the end of your time living there. For example, you might have to put down a deposit of £350 for a 10-month tenancy, meaning that if you move out after 9 months you get back £315!
